Fill a carbon nanotube with the metal gallium and you’ve got the world’s
smallest thermometer—and it’s sensitive enough to measure the tiny
temperature change when groups of molecules react, say researchers at the
National Institute for Materials Science in Ibaraki, Japan (Nature, vol
415, p 599). There’s one little drawback: you need an electron microscope to
read it.
