Japan’s 91É«Ç鯬 and Welfare Ministry is planning to launch a screening system
for genetically modified food which will require all GM products to be tested
for safety. Any that fail the test will be recalled. It will replace the current
voluntary system, further tightening Japan’s controls over GM food. Last year,
the government drew up guidelines requiring the labelling of GM food packages,
but it has always maintained that consumer information rather than safety is
the main issue.
