The US Office Of Naval Research is contemplating building an enormous
seagoing naval base. The floating, mobile base, which would cost $5
billion if it were built, would have a 1.5-kilometre runway and accommodation
for up to 10 000 troops. Norwegian shipping company Kvaerner is bidding to carry
out a feasibility study of the idea.
