Warring factions in Yugoslavia have already wrecked three national parks
in Croatia, warned Branko Salaj, the Croatian Minister of Information, speaking
in London last week. Salaj says that federal tanks have destroyed the fragile
environment of one park, the Plitvice Lakes, which they have occupied since
April. Two other parks – the Paklajnice Park and the Sibenik Park – have
faced severe shelling from the Federal Army. ‘The parks have been used as
a battlefield,’ he said.
