Robots are machines capable of carrying out physical tasks. They can be directly controlled by humans, or have some ability to operate by themselves, but the independent intelligent machines seen in science fiction are still a long way off. The word “robot” was coined by the Czech writer Karel Čapek in a 1920 play called Rossum’s Universal Robots, and is derived from the Czech robota, meaning “drudgery” or “servitude”. Jacob Aron
