I've seen several archaeological shows in which skulls are built up to create...

I’ve seen several archaeological shows in which skulls are built up to create “real-life faces”. How valid is this? Has anyone tested the procedure by giving people a complete, contemporary skull when a picture exists of the person, and seeing how it compares to the recreated image?
