Activists threaten to uproot engineered UK crops

Biologists who are testing a wheat that is resistant to aphids have asked protesters not to ruin their field test

GENETICALLY modified crops cover 70 million hectares in the US, according to industry groups. Across the pond, UK scientists wishing to plant one test field must beg protesters not to uproot it. Such is the contrast between approaches to modified crops on either side of the Atlantic.

In the latest UK row, staff at in Harpenden are pitted against protest group . The biologists are testing . The protest group says it will 鈥渄econtaminate鈥 the site on 27 May.

Rothamsted last week released and videos asking protesters not to destroy the crop. It says say the wheat could reduce the use of harmful pesticides. Take the Flour Back says the wheat includes a gene that could spread antibiotic resistance. They agreed to a public debate, but for now still intend to uproot the field.
