Double trouble on the roads?

Partners mimic each others' driving styles – the most reckless male drivers are more likely to have partners with bad road habits too

HOWEVER severely men and women may criticise each other’s driving, they are a lot more like their partners than they might like to think.

Traffic psychologist Orit Taubman-Ben-Ari of Bar-Ilan University in Israel asked 413 male-female couples to rate their own driving skills and those of their partners. The results showed that though men tended to report that they drove more recklessly and aggressively than women, the partners of the most reckless and aggressive men were also more reckless and aggressive than other women drivers. “Our results support our hypothesis of a similarity between couples’ driving styles,” she says.

The results will be published in Transportation Research Part F.
