IN Twilight of the Mammoths, palaeontologist Paul Martin reprises his 鈥渙verkill鈥� hypothesis, blaming over-hunting by humans for the extinction of the ice age megafauna of mammoths, Neanderthals, sloths and others within the last few tens of thousands of years. But Martin is a romantic at heart: not only does he mourn the loss of the magnificent beasts of the ice age, he also wants to restore as many as possible to the North American wilderness by 鈥渞estarting the evolution鈥� of these lost giants. Nice idea, and good luck to him.
