It’s not only movie buffs who want to import DVDs that won’t work in their
region—TV addicts are at it too. Jazz, the epic series, comes on
10 DVDs in the US, running for around 20 hours. But the export version has been
edited down to just four, running for half the time. Jazz buffs who want the
original version will find the studios have put a regional coding on US DVDs to
prevent them being played in Europe and Australia. So British electronics
company Datel has taken on Hollywood. Its “Region X Key” is a cartridge that
simply plugs into the memory slot of a Sony PlayStation 2 games/DVD console and
defeats the regional coding.
