A group of environmentalists and scientists last week urged the US government
to ban the sale and import of genetically modified fish until possible dangers
can be studied. The call comes as Aqua Bounty Farms of Waltham, Massachusetts,
petitions the Food and Drug Administration to approve a GM salmon that can grow
10 times as fast as normal salmon. A coalition headed by the Center for Food
Safety in Washington DC says we don鈥檛 yet understand the health dangers of GM
fish, and that if the fish escaped they could breed faster than wild salmon and
drive them to extinction.
