American poultry farmers will have to stop pumping their animals full of
fluoroquinolone antibiotics, under plans announced by the US Food and Drug
Administration. The practice fosters drug-resistant bacteria that cause
untreatable gastric illnesses in humans, the FDA says. Last year the poultry
industry in Britain agreed to encourage farmers to cut down on antibiotic use.
But Richard Young of the Soil Association, which regulates organic farming, says
British officials should work for a ban.
