The British public appears to be enthralled but concerned about the rapid
pace of research, according to a survey of public attitudes to science by the
government and the Wellcome Trust. Three-quarters of the population are 鈥渁mazed鈥
by the achievements of science. But 41 per cent of people are worried that
research moves so fast the government cannot control it properly, and 56 per
cent believe that scientists try things without thinking about the risks.
