ST JOHN’S wort is just as good for combating the blues as other
antidepressants. In the largest ever study, more than 300 people in Germany with
mild to moderate depression took either St John’s wort or imipramine, a common
antidepressant, for six weeks. The researchers concluded that the two are
“equivalent”, but fewer side effects were reported by those taking St John’s
wort (British Medical Journal, vol 321, p 536).
