Some cars already have front and side airbags, but drivers could one day be
completely enveloped by them if Autoliv Development of Sweden has its way. The
firm has developed an elongated airbag that鈥檚 stowed above the car鈥檚 doors and
windows (GB 2 333 074/5/6). In an accident, the bags extend down to provide a
curtain of collision cushioning. The bags cocoon the driver at head level, while
leaving the door handles unobstructed for a quick escape.
