The Rover Group has invented a system that could reduce leg injuries in car
crashes. Car occupants’ knees are often injured when they bounce off springy
interior panels. Rover says the answer is to fit the panels on a ratchet
mechanism that collapses under impact, reducing injuries (GB 2 335 171). Each
ratchet is made just strong enough to withstand the forces applied when panels
are fitted, but weak enough to break in an accident.
