Muscovites Mikhail Safronov and Vyacheslav Bartenev want to let drivers know
how long it will be before the traffic lights change (EP 886 253). They suggest
suspending two red and two green lamps alongside the main traffic lights. All
three lights of one colour would start to flash 20 seconds before a change. Then
one by one they would stop to give a countdown effect. A steady green or red
light will still mean 鈥済o鈥 or 鈥渟top鈥 respectively. The inventors say drivers
approaching the lights will know when they are running out of time to cross a
junction, and those who are stationary can tear away the moment they change.
