One way to make video camcorders less expensive—and cheaper to
repair—is to use fewer components. Camcorders usually have two screens,
which makes them bulky and power hungry. So Samsung has ditched the small screen
usually fitted inside the viewfinder on top of the camera, leaving just one
screen on the side (WO 98/51074). The viewfinder is formed by clipping a mirror
and a lens over the top. At the same time the camera’s electronics switch the
display on the screen to its mirror image, so that the image appears the right
way round when it is reflected through the viewfinder.
