Digital TV carries so many channels that viewers can often be spoilt for
choice. Even on-screen electronic programme guides can only provide title lists
and a brief synopsis. So Starsight Telecast of Fremont, California, is patenting
(WO 98/26596) an EPG which also provides brief video previews. The system
repeatedly injects short sequences of low-definition video into the programme
signal at intervals throughout the day. This will allow viewers to watch a
trailer in a small window on the TV screen.
