The use of magnetic fields to reach low temperatures could be broadened by
the discovery of an alloy of gadolinium that is 25 per cent more efficient at
magnetic cooling than the pure gadolinium that is currently used. The efficiency
of the gadolinium-silicon-germanium alloy was discovered at the US Department of
Energy鈥檚 Ames Laboratory at Iowa State University.
