Ontario Hydro, the company that owns and operates almost all of Canada鈥檚
nuclear power stations, announced last week that it will shut down 7 of its 19
reactors within a year because they are operating at only 鈥渕inimally acceptable鈥�
safety levels. The company has been forced to act after a damning report slated
substandard management and work practices. Ontario Hydro itself had commissioned
the report. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not the technology, it鈥檚 a people issue, a management
problem,鈥� says a spokesman. Some of the reactors may never reopen.
