FOUR eminent engineers have decided to do something about Australia’s dismal
record of capitalising on research. Bob Brown, a former chief of the
CSIRO Division of Manufacturing Technology, Bob Davie, who was director
of the Swinburne Institute of Technology, Graeme Ogilvie, a CSIRO
researcher in materials science and manufacturing technology and the late Alf
Carter, a director of several engineering firms, have distilled their
experience into a slim paperback entitled Research, Development and
Innovation (A$35, EA Books). The book covers research methods and
procedures, and how to apply them from the glimmer of an idea through to
bringing a product to the marketplace. It talks of such practical matters as
project management, budgets, intellectual property and patent disputes. Case
