AN ARTIST friend was rambling on about all things environmental the other
night when it became clear he was under the impression that global warming and
ozone depletion were the same thing. Somewhat taken aback, Netropolitan set
about explaining the two phenomena and what is believed to be behind them.
Did that clear things up for him? 鈥淢ore or less, but there鈥檚 one thing I
still don鈥檛 understand,鈥 said the friend. 鈥淚f there are all these holes in the
ozone layer, why don鈥檛 the greenhouse gases just escape through them into
蝉辫补肠别?鈥
It turned into a long evening. Netropolitan might have made more headway by
enlisting the help of some of the question-and-answer sites available on the
Web. Apart from the Strange Ways section of our own Planet Science
(/), Netropolitan鈥檚 favourite is the Mad Scientist
Network at http://medinfo.wustl.edu/~ysp/MSN/. For a list of others, some
of which specialise in particular subjects, check out
