John Kenneth Galbraith is no social Darwinist. In The Good Society: The
Humane Agenda (Houghton Mifflin $21.95 ISBN 0 395 71328
5/Sinclair-Stevenson, £12.99 from September in UK,) the towering Harvard
economist, now approaching 90 years of age, muses about the kind of economic and
social landscape that would be necessary if all people, regardless of gender,
race or ethnic origin, were to have “access to a rewarding life”. In a world
filled with tax-slashers and the interest-rate obsessed, Galbraith’s book is a
refreshing read.
